Formulation Specialist

The Formulation Specialist plays a key role in the formulation and development of nutritional supplements and functional food products. Operating within an R&D laboratory environment, this position is responsible for supporting product development from concept through to production readiness. The specialist will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure products are effective, high quality, and aligned with business goals. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, innovative, and driven to bring high-quality nutritional products to the market.

Key Responsibilities

Formulation Development & Innovation

  • Develop and optimize supplement and functional food formulations with a focus on sensory quality, nutritional value, and functional efficacy.

  • Conduct bench-scale development and support pilot-scale and full-scale production runs.

  • Collaborate with internal teams including Quality, Regulatory, Procurement and Manufacturing.

  • Research and evaluate new ingredients for functionality, safety, stability, and cost-effectiveness.

  • Troubleshoot technical challenges and propose solutions during formulation development.

  • Design, plan, and execute experiments to validate formulation performance and support innovation.

  • Stay current with scientific literature, industry trends, and regulatory developments to inform formulation strategies.

Technical Analysis & Reporting

  • Conduct organoleptic and physical analyses of raw materials and prototypes.

  • Coordinate with external laboratories for analytical and stability testing, ensuring clarity in test requirements and accurate interpretation of results.

  • Analyze experimental data and provide technical recommendations based on findings.

  • Maintain detailed records of formulations, trials, and test outcomes.

  • Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate project updates and results to internal stakeholders.

Cross-functional Collaboration & Project Support

  • Actively engage with internal teams including Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Marketing, and Operations to support end-to-end product development.

  • Assist in writing and reviewing product and ingredient specifications as well as supporting the creation of artwork.

  • Support pilot trials and production scale-up activities.

  • Participate in ingredient and vendor qualification processes.

Laboratory Management

  • Maintain an organized and clean R&D lab environment.

  • Ensure compliance with lab safety protocols and best practices.

  • Manage and track inventory of raw materials and lab supplies.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related scientific discipline.

  • 2 + years of experience with product formulation in nutritional or pharmaceutical product development.

  • Ability to interpret scientific and technical literature and apply findings to formulation work.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive, hands-on approach to development challenges.

  • Excellent attention to detail and strong documentation practices.

  • Effective communicator—both written and verbal—across functional teams and cultural contexts.

  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, global environment.

  • Flexible and adaptable to shifting project needs and timelines.

  • Strong sense of ownership and accountability for assigned responsibilities.
